Avery County, North Carolina — Some folks had been skeptical, at first, of the stranger who rolled into flood-ravaged Avery County in western North Carolina this week claiming to be some sort of Santa.
But, he endured, approaching folks in parking heaps, grocery shops, and even motel rooms, the place these displaced by Hurricane Helene are nonetheless sheltering three months after the devastating storm.
Yearly, this nameless, rich businessman travels the nation throughout the holidays gifting away about $100,000 in $100 payments.
The cash goes to random strangers and other people he seeks out, realizing their want. Why did this Secret Santa wish to come to North Carolina?
“I believe when folks undergo tragedy, they will lose their home — all their belongings,” he instructed CBS Information. “However what they cannot lose is hope. And possibly we can provide a bit of hope.”
Amongst these he sought out was Jamie Guinn. In the course of the top of Helene, a mudslide ripped the storage off the Avery County residence Guinn lived in along with his spouse, Melissa.
“I grabbed ahold of her and I stated, ‘At the least we obtained one another,'” Jamie instructed CBS Information. “‘We are able to repair the home.’ And it could not have been 10 minutes later, and I keep in mind simply getting crushed.”
A second mudslide took the entire home and claimed Melissa’s life.
“You have not actually misplaced her as a result of she’s with you and she or he’s smiling down on you proper now,” Secret Santa instructed Guinn.
It is these phrases of consolation — the hugs and the hope from a complete stranger — that basically appear to maneuver folks, rather more than the cash itself.
“That is the reward, that you have not been forgotten about, that we do know you are there,” the Secret Santa stated. “And we do care.”
